Enough fuss about these shootings.

 

Let's face it, we are a violent nation:

 

  1. The nation was formed by violently removing most of the indigenous population.

  2. Won independence through a war.

  3. Has been at war for most of the intervening years

  4. Kid's toys are violent;

  5. Kid's TV programs are violent;

  6. Sports are violent;

  7. Video games are violent;

  8. Movies are violent.

  9. Guns are easy to acquire. Anyone who wants one can get hold of one with very little effort, legally or otherwise.  People have little sense of responsibilty or discipline.  Powerful lobbyists such as the National Rifle Association are pushing for gun ownership for all at any price. Politicians are too weak or greedy for the re-election money to resist.

  10. Whenever there is some incident people rush into the streets and start committing violent acts  calling it 'a protest'. These acts are often worse than the original incident. We have the right of peaceful assembly (Amendment 1) but not of looting and shooting.

  11. People yell, "Send troops out to kill" at the first sign of trouble in foreign lands where we have no business being  and poo-poo diplomatic efforts for peace.

 

 

Second Amendment

 

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

 

  1. I do not want to see guns banned.

  2. I do want to be assured that when I see someone with a gun he has been trained in the safe handling and storage of that weapon.

  3. I would like to see mandatory liability insurance for all gun owners, just as we have for people driving vehicles on the road.

  4. I would like to see mandatory licensing for the type of weapon owned, just as we have for people driving vehicles on the road and people operating Amateur Radio Service radios.

  5. I would like to see the licensing linked to a training program. E.g. to own this type of weapon you must take this course and hold this level of license.  To own a larger weapon you must take that course and hold that level of license.

  6. I would like to see all guns registered and test-fired. Every weapon should be linked to an owner of record who is then responsible for any harm stemming from the use of that weapon.  This information held in a national database. When a gun is sold or reported stolen the change of ownership is then recorded in the database.

  7. I would like to see severe penalties for the possession of a weapon for which the holder does not have  a licence, training, insurance and/or a test firing certificate.
